BLUE MARLIN (Makaira nigricans) The blue marlin is a highly regarded member of the billfish family and considered by many anglers to be the top big game species in the sea. Blues have lavender stripes that appear when excited but fade after death. The lateral line is not visible in adults without removing scales. The back is dark blue and the belly is a silver/white.

Typical range: Highly migratory throughout the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. They roam deep waters and congregate near baitfish-producing bottom structures such as continental shelves, canyons and reefs.

Common Tackle: Heavy trolling rods and lever-drag reels with 50- to 130-pound line are standard equipment. Blue marlin can also be caught with heavy fly fishing gear.

Common Fishing Method: Trolling natural baits, brightly colored lures and teasers. Fast trolling is the style. Trolling with squid imitations and various large trolling lures is by far the most common method. Whole live and dead bait rigs are also popular, including but not limited to bonito, dolphin, mullet, mackerel, ballyhoo and squid.

Common Baits: Blues are voracious and not very selective eaters. They will consume most any baitfish presented to them but their preferences are frigate and Spanish mackerel, squid, whole dolphin, whole blackfin tuna, bonefish, flying fish, all local food fish, fish strips and artificial lures.
